Maa Ooriki Okkasari Poyi Raavaali

Jnapakala Baruvuto Tirigi Raavali

( Let's go visit our village just once

Let's come back laden with memories.)

Rajani and her friend Vaani wrote this song to celebrate their reunion. When they parted they were around 9 years old. Now they are 13. Vaani returned to her little village in the Varni mandal of Nizamabad district, Andhra Pradesh, when her parents, who had migrated four years ago for work, decided to come back. The song is a celebration of returning to the safe little haven - their village.

What does the village mean to the children? Green fields, pure air, friends, school. A blackboard to write their thoughts on. And a canvas to paint their vision!

Life's tough for the children of 76 villages in the five mandals of Nizamabad district. Many have to travel long distance every day to another village to attend secondary school. They live in pockets where the very basic amenities are a privilege, where nothing changes for years together.

Samskar, the partner NGO of Plan International in Nizamabad district, has attempted to change things for the better, all through the energy and innovation of children. It has inspired children to knock on the doors of all the powers-that-be that could make a difference to their lives.
